Planning Dates for year 2001 program: No final dates at this time, look for the program to start in June and run six weeks

To be held on the campus of Iowa State University at the International Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics (IITAP)

The application process should begin with a normal application through the IITAP visitors program.

Welcome
Welcome to the information page for NUMAPS 2000. This will be the 7th year IITAP will be running the NUMAPS program on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and IITAP is quite looking forward to this event. For further information about the NUMAPS program please contact the NUMAPS coordinator, Douglas Fils <fils@iastate.edu>

The program
Enabling scientists and educators to interact with each other using networks and information technology, whether it be in a local environment or around the world, is the goal of NUMAPS. Networks for Use in Math and Physical Sciences (NUMAPS) is a program run by IITAP at the campus of Iowa State University, Ames Iowa.

Started in 1994 this yearly program is run in the summer months as an opportunity for IITAP to provide hands on experience with the technology and procedures used by IITAP to carry out its educational and scientific activities. In keeping with IITAP's strong connection with international partners the institute focuses on open source solutions and commodity hardware to address its needs. This allows IITAP to provide a training environment for IITAP participants that is realistic with the support and budget issues that many research and educational institutes face while at the same time providing high performance and reliability systems. No compromises in the areas of performance or capability are incurred with this approach.

Participants in NUMAPS gain hands on experience with setup, configuration and administration of open source servers to support education and academic research needs. Internet technology as well as network services are addressed.

In addition shorter courses based on the NUMAPS material and methods have in the past been run at local institutions. These short courses focus on specific needs in the area of distance education or distance science.

NUMAPS developers program
The NUMAPS developers program (passwd required) is a new branch of the NUMAPS program built around the need to improve the communication between IITAP and past and present NUMAPS participants to continue forward with project development. This environment is of course available to other projects within IITAP. Taking advantage Internet based services and programs developed at IITAP and other locations it is based on a small collaborative Internet framework (SCIF) with the focus being ease of use and light weight. Further information is available regarding the NUMAPS developers program as well as more information about its structure.

Virtual work-groups
The Portfolio and SCIF packages mentioned above are development projects of IITAP being driven by the Global Change Course, Whole Earth Telescope, PIRCS, and other IITAP programs. The need to increase these and other programs effectiveness through central development efforts at IITAP has lead to this packages. Myself and Mike Taber along with undergraduate assistants have created these packages based on years of experience in Internet based education and research projects. The projects, codes, and experiences are the basis of the NUMAPS workshop and we hope to share them with you soon.

NUMAPS 99 pages
The link above take you to some of the NUMAPS 99 pages. These pages were our work pages and still need to be cleaned up some but I wanted to get them on-line for people to see now.
