The High-Tc Superconductivity Information Center and High-Tc Update newsletter were started in April 1987 as a short-term solution for a crisis situation: the need to communicate frequent--almost daily--breakthroughs in high-Tc superconductivity. Over the years, it became a successful model for how research results can be very effectively communicated.

NOTE: Our final Nota Bene calls attention to 99 papers (including two review articles) in the December preprint list. Also included are links to stories about (a) the 2003 Nobel Prizes related to superconductivity, (b) the costs of the cancellation of the SSC ten years ago, (c) two recent publications reporting Bose-Einstein condensation of molecules consisting of pairs of fermions, (d) two disconnected superconducting domes in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of partially germanium-substituted CeCu2Si2, and (e) 9.6 K superconductivity in KOs2O6, which has the pyrochlore structure.

Also provided are hyperlinks to news articles related to (a) scientific misconduct and (b) superconductivity and its applications.

High-Tc Update ceasing new activity December 31, 2003

Dear Colleagues:

Because of the recent economic downturn and budget cuts in Washington, D.C., the High-Tc Update suffered a vital loss of income from our major contributors. Several months ago, we announced that our financial situation had become critical and that unless we could obtain new sources of financial support, we would not be able to continue operating. Thanks to contributions from Iowa State University and several loyal supporters, we were able to stay in business a few months longer. However, our resources have come to an end, and we therefore are ceasing new activity at the end of 2003.

However, since the High-Tc Update has a search engine that provides access to a large database of useful information about preprints and published papers accumulated since the initial issue of our newsletter on May 1, 1987, we will be maintaining this web site and keeping it accessible to users. See http://www.physics.iastate.edu/searchhtcu.php for this database, which contains over 74,000 records, and http://www.iitap.iastate.edu/htcu/archive.html for access to back issues of the High-Tc Update newsletter dated January 1, 1992 to April 15, 2000. Unfortunately, we cannot support the personnel needed to add new material, and thus the content will remain static.

We encourage scientists and engineers involved in superconductivity to make all their preprints available via ArXiv, the highly useful electronic preprint database at Cornell University [http://arxiv.org/list/cond-mat.supr-con/recent] with mirror sites at Los Alamos National Laboratory [http://xxx.lanl.gov/list/cond-mat.supr-con/recent] and elsewhere [http://arxiv.org/servers.html]. Submit your papers to cond-mat in the Superconductivity subject class. ArXiv [see http://arxiv.org/] provides an automatic alert service, which notifies users of new preprints. Those who have Internet access should use ArXiv's web interface. It is a convenient way to scan the day's papers. However, those without a good Internet connection may wish to subscribe to regular e-mail listings. See Other Databases at http://www.iitap.iastate.edu/htcu/othersites.html for other useful sources of information about preprints and published papers.

We are grateful to those of you who have been loyal supporters of the High-Tc Update since it first appeared in 1987. Thank you very much for both sending us your preprints and providing us with financial support. It's been a great ride!

Sincerely yours,

John R. Clem, High-Tc Update Science Advisor
