The two-dimensional SU(N) quantum antiferromagnet, a generalization of the quantum Heisenberg model, is investigated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ground state for N\le 4 is found to be of the Néel type with broken SU(N) symmetry, whereas it is of the Spin-Peierls type for N\ge 5 with broken lattice translational invariance. No intermediate spin-liquid phase was observed in contrast to previous numerical simulations on smaller lattices [Santoro et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83} 3065 (1999)].

Adelwitz Technologiezentrum GmbH (ATZ), Adelwitz, Germany; tel. 49 34222 45200; e-mail: werfel@t-online.de. We describe a heavy load HTS radial bearing dedicated for use in motors, generators and flywheels. The HTS bearing is of radial type design providing both radial and axial support. Stator and rotor are modular assemblies and allow up-scaling in size. The superconducting stator is a polycrystalline melt textured (pmt) YBCO 200 mm inner diameter hollow cylinder grown in cylinder-like a-b texture, assembled of axially stacked YBCO rings in a Cu tube and cooled from the outside by LN2. The rotor consists of annular PM rings on a shaft stacked of pressure and resulting in a high radial magnetic field gradient. Three such bearing YBCO stators have been fabricated, assembled and tested for use with a 380 kW superconducting motor developed by Siemens. Maximum radial forces of more than 370 kg were measured (at a temperature of 68 K) with the shaft at radial centre position. Practical aspects of the bearing are discussed: Air gap vs. magnetic pole length, YBCO texture vs. mechanical stability, static vs. dynamic behaviour. The goal is to demonstrate safe operation of heavy rotors in a desired frequency range by providing sufficient forces, stiffnesses and damping at critical modes.
