Part 2. Exploring Scientific Evidence and Evaluating Choices
What other evidence suggests global warming?
Loss of ice at the edges of Antarctica
Another change that possibly is linked to global warming is a rise in temperature over the Antarctic continent of 1 degree Celsius in the last 50 years. This has led to the disintegration of some ice shelves that extend from the continent out into the Antarctic ocean and the collapse of the Larson Ice Shelf that created a floating chunk of ice the size of Rhode Island. (Source: The American Chemical Society)Atmospheric scientists using global climate models have concluded that high-latitude (polar) regions will warm more than the global average. The 1 degree Celsius rise over Antarctica over the last 50 years, being a much faster rate than the global average, is consistent with scientific expectations for global warming.
